Core Stability Training is a very important aspect of training. It focuses on the deep muscles of the abdominal area. Core muscles are design to stabilise the pelvis and keep the spine in alignment. The core muscles have an influence on virtually every other type of movement as they hold the body in the correct position whilst using other body parts. Athletes spend much more time these days on this part of their routine.

The key benefits to core stability training are:

  1. Improved balance
  2. Improved joint and body stability
  3. Improved posture
  4. Increased core strength
  5. Reduced risk of injury
  6. Improved sporting performance

How do you do Core Stability Training exercises?

It depends on your goals ultimately. If you require better functional ability so you can go about your daily life and general exercise routine then a host of abdominal muscles and pelvic floor exercises will help. Using a fitball or wobble board is popular to place a bigger demand on the core muscles and it's fun too!

Sport specific exercises may focus on individual areas of core strength depending on the sport and the movements involved. For example, injury recovery for an ankle will include core exercises to help development of ankle strength and reduced risk of re-occurance.

Pilates and Yoga are good examples of core exercise. It is essential that you do some sort of core stability training as part of your routine. It will make your abs look good and keep you walking tall.
